8. Mike Towell (12 September 1991 – 30 September 2016)

Mike collapsed in the ring after he was stopped in the fifth round and was rushed to hospital after receiving attention from the ringside medical team. He was carried out of the ring on a stretcher he had severe bleeding and swelling to his brain. He had been complaining of headaches for the last few weeks but we put it down to migraines with the stress of his fight

7. Johnny Owen (7 January 1956 – 4 November 1980)

Johnny challenged champion Lupe Pintor for his version of the World Bantamweight title on 19 September 1980, losing a difficult contest by way of twelfth round knockout. Owen never regained consciousness, he fell into a coma and died seven weeks later. A statue commemorating his life and career was unveiled in his hometown in 2012.

6. Beethaeven Scottland (January 11, 1975 – July 1, 2001)

Scottland stepped in the ring to face George Khalid Jones The overmatched Scottland lasted into the tenth round of the fight, but had been hit with many flush shots from Jones throughout the fight and commentator Max Kellerman, who was calling the fight for ESPN2 that evening, said numerous times on the broadcast that the fight should have been halted prior to the tenth round. Finally, Jones hurt Scottland in the tenth and Scottland dropped to the canvas and was counted out having not risen to his feet. Scottland had to be helped from the ring and fell into a coma, dying from his injuries on July 1, 2001. Referee, Arthur Mercante Jr. was criticized in the media for years afterward for allowing Scottland to continue fighting.

5. Jimmy Garcia (October 12, 1971 – May 19, 1995)

Jimmy was a Colombian boxer who was best known for losing a WBC super featherweight title to Gabriel Ruelas and subsequently dying 13 days later from brain damage. The loss to Ruelas was the only stoppage loss of Garcia's career, and the former Colombian Featherweight champion's corner was criticized for not stopping the fight earlier.

4. Leavander Johnson (December 24, 1969 – September 22, 2005)

Johnson defended his title for the first time against Jesús Chávez. The fight was stopped early in the 11th round after Johnson received a barrage of punches from his opponent. Despite being able to leave the ring under his own momentum, he collapsed in his dressing room shortly afterwards. He was rushed to the hospital and had emergency surgery to correct a subdural hematoma (swelling and bleeding on the brain). Following the surgery, Johnson was placed in a drug-induced coma. Despite initial fears that he would not survive the night even after the surgery, he survived into the next week and was showing some early signs of improvement, but still remained in critical condition. However, his condition stopped improving and on September 22, 2005, it was decided to discontinue efforts to artificially prolong his life. He was pronounced dead at 4:23 p.m. PDT surrounded by his family.

3. Tubagus Sakti (11/09/95 - 27/01/13)

A junior flyweight title bout between two 17-year-old boxers was halted in the 8th round. Ical Tobida was handed the victory by technical knock-out after Sakti could no longer continue.

Unfortunately, it was probably too late for Sakti. Not long after the end of the bout, Sakti collapsed in his corner and went into convulsions. Medical personelle rushed to treat the boy, putting him on oxygen and carrying him off to the hospital on a stretcher. However, Tubagus Sakta was later pronounced dead at the hospital as a result of a brain hemorrhage.

2. Yo-Sam Choi (March 1, 1972 – January 3, 2008)

In the 12th round, Choi was dropped with five seconds remaining, but beat the count and went on to win the fight. He collapsed while still in the ring after the bout and was rushed to the hospital immediately after the fight in order to undergo emergency brain surgery. Choi was pronounced brain-dead and died on January 3, 2008, when he was removed from a ventilator. His organs were donated to six patients with approval from his family. This action led the South Korean Government to award Choi with a medal

1. Francisco "Frankie" Leal (15/05/87 - 22/10/13)

Francisco “Frankie” Leal died on Tuesday from complications stemming from a brain injury he suffered this weekend during a knockout loss to Raul Hirales. Hilares controlled the bout from the start, knocking Leal to the mat in the sixth round with a right hand. In the eighth round, he knocked the southpaw down with another blow to the head. Leal managed to struggle to his feet, but collapsed soon afterward and never regained consciousness.
