Classic car photography

Lydden Hill is a race track in South Kent, between Canterbury and Dover. It’s a brilliant race track with a unique dirt road section that is highly entertaining. I went to the Classic and Modern car race on the 12th October and despite the rain, it was a great day out.

My passion for photography stems from my fascination with individual characters. I love walking around the paddock and photographing the drivers, team members and the sense of family surrounding these events. One benefit I had (partial thanks to the rain) was that the track was pretty much empty. There were about 20 spectators and double that number in staff, making it much easier to get around the track and really isolate my subjects.

My favourite image from this shoot is the Morgan with the yellow umbrella covering the driver’s seat. The driver was quietly reading a book and eating a sandwich whilst waiting for his race to start at 12:45. I went over to him and we chatted for 5 minutes or so, he had driven down from Worcester for the day. Lovely chap and he came first in his race!
