ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
The African rap scene is thriving. Attesting to this are Brussels-based MC Baloji and his sophisticated production blending soukous and urban rhythms; the Parisian collective Bisso Na Bisso, who once wrote a moving pan-African manifesto; and Ghanaian creator Blitz The Ambassador, known for bridging the gap between African repertoires and hip-hop culture. This highly symbolic alliance is now reinforced by musical experiments such as the Tempo Tempo project, a fine tribute to drummer Tony Allen, and the work of James BKS. The son of Manu Dibango, a musician himself known for mixing different cultures, James BKS is renowned for his work as a producer. He has worked with American rappers such as Snoop Dogg and Puff Daddy, and invited big names including Carlos Santana and Ibrahim Maalouf to feature on his latest album. This finely-constructed concert, recorded at the Art Rock festival, blends rap with African and funk tracks. Backed by a tight band, James BKS pays tribute to his father with “Kwele,” whose voice introduces the track. The rest of the set flows naturally: the scansions typical of rap blend naturally with the myriad of rhythms revisited here. This is particularly embodied by a reinterpretation of “Soul Makossa,” one of the first African hits of the modern era and an intrinsic part of this heritage.
