Remembrance Day 2023 in Israel

Today, on the 11th Day of the 11th month, Armistice Day 2023, we here in Israel remember, honor and commemorate the fallen who gave the lives in this part of the world during the two World Wars. We, here, are in a period of mourning over our brothers and sisters that were savagely slaughtered a few weeks ago and our fallen soldiers who were killed in fighting that still goes on, as these words are written. Still, we deeply honor and commemorate those people, who gave their lives in the past, believing in the values of freedom, each from their different backgrounds and perspectives.

People of different faiths – Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Sikh – all fought here, in the Holy Land. They came from all corners of the world: England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Turkey (Ottoman Empire), Australia, Germany, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Austro-Hungarian, India, South Africa, France, North Africa, Armenia, Italy, Canada, the Caribbean Islands and others. We remember, honor and commemorate them all.

This year's official Remembrance Ceremonies of the different foreign embassies, at the War Cemeteries in this country, were cancelled. Many Israelis wrote or called us asking about the Remembrance Ceremonies, and many felt that we should find a way to show our respect, even though the troubled days we are experiencing here. In response, we asked many good people to go out to monuments and commemoration plaques spread throughout the country, to lay a red flower on them and send me photos of them.

Instead of a visit to the War Cemeteries, we visited a Jewish civilian cemetery, where several headstones show us different aspects of the period of the Great War in this country. The attached short film is about the visit to Rishon le Zion Cemetery and includes photos of the monuments and commemoration plaques from all over the country.
