The Kingdom of Luang Phrabang was formed in 1707 as a result of the split of the Kingdom of Lan Xang.

The kingdom was colonized by France in 1893 and became a Protectorate of France.

When Japan occupied Laos, King Luang Phrabang Sisavang Vong declared Luang Phrabang independent (became a puppet state of Japan). But after Japan surrendered, Lao Issara took over the country. They and the Lao people want independence.

But the French came and succeeded in conquering Laos in 1946. In 1947 the Kingdom of Luang Phrabang, Kingdom of Champasak, and Surroundings declared the Kingdom of Laos. With King Sisavang Vong of Luang Phrabang as its King. They had declared the independence of Laos in 1949. Until finally Laos was granted independence in 1953.

In 1959, there was a Lao civil war between the Pathet Lao Communist Forces (formerly Neo Lao Issara). Ruled by Prince Souphanouvong and the Kingdom of Laos led by Prince Souvanna Phouma (under the King Sisavang Vatthana).

In 1975, Pathet Lao succeeded in occupying Vientiane City and took over Laos and dissolved the Lao Monarchy / Kingdom. King Sisavang Vatthana (reigned from 1959-1975) was forced to step down from his throne. King Sisavang Vatthana became the Advisor to the President until he was finally sent to the Detention Camp and spent the rest of his life there. December 2, 1975, Pathet Lao declared the Lao People's Democratic Republic with Prince Souphanouvong as President and Kaysone Phomvihane (Chairman of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party (the Party that ruled in Laos from 1975 to the present)) as Prime Minister. Until now Laos is still controlled by the Communists and they are already open to the outside world.
