Katie Mahan — Beethoven’s “Appassionata” Sonata

Katie Mahan — Beethoven’s Sonata No. 23 in F minor, Op. 57 “Appassionata”

Steinway Artist Katie Mahan performs Beethoven’s celebrated ‘Appassionata’ sonata, part of her latest project for Steinway & Sons, and part of Steinway's ongoing celebration of the 250th Beethoven anniversary.

Set in modern-day Vienna and the Vienna Woods, we enter the drama of Beethoven’s world with interspersing glimpses of places where Beethoven found inspiration during his more than 35 years at the Austrian capital.

The video opens with a quick view of the Beethoven statue created in 2017 by Markus Lüpertz in cooperation with the city of Vienna to celebrate the Beethoven Year 2020 and lend expression to the problematic aspects of the composer’s life. A handful of locations with unique connections to Beethoven make an appearance, including the Beethoven Wanderweg in the Helenental, the Mölker Bastei, the Beethovenplatz, and finally the iconic Stephansplatz. The repeated appearance of a young man — who one can imagine to be a young Beethoven fighting desperately to escape his fate — rides through the Vienna Woods on a white Lipizzaner-style horse. Piano scenes were filmed in cooperation with Steinway-Haus in Vienna.
