The Rubiks Cube is the most popular puzzle in the entire world. For decades now, it has fascinated and challenged people of all ages in various countries around the globe. From young children to engineers, philosophers, mathematicians and everyone in between, this puzzle has captivated millions of people. In fact, it is estimated that one in seven people have touched a Rubiks Cube at least once. Probably more fascinating than the Cube itself is how this puzzle came to be. Hungarian inventor, Erno Rubik, is the man behind the popular puzzle. He challenged himself to make the first Rubiks cube in his room at his mother’s apartment. After succeeding at this project, he faced more difficulties while trying to make the Cube available to the public due to the rigid communist economy of Hungary at the time. Rubik powered through and because of his perseverance, his invention became a global phenomenon, and even helped Hungary along its path to becoming a free economy.
This is the story of the Rubiks cube and how its inventor, Erno Rubik, became the first self-made millionaire from the communist block.
