In this video, we show you how to change DPI in InDesign during export. DPI (dots per inch), often referred to as resolution, is critical for achieving sharp, high-quality output—especially for print materials like brochures, magazines, posters, or packaging.
🧐 What is DPI and Why It Matters in InDesign?
• DPI (dots per inch) determines how detailed an image will appear when printed.
• Common standards:
• 300 DPI = High-resolution print quality
• 150 DPI = Medium quality (posters or drafts)
• 72 DPI = Screen use (web or digital presentations)
Even though InDesign doesn’t let you change a document’s DPI directly, it allows you to adjust DPI when exporting to images or PDFs. This ensures your final file is optimized for its intended use.
🛠 Step-by-Step: How to Change DPI in InDesign
✅ 1. Open Your InDesign Document
Start by launching Adobe InDesign and opening your file.
✅ 2. Go to 'File' 'Export'
Click on File in the top menu, then select Export.
✅ 3. Choose Your Export Format
In the Format dropdown, select one of the following:
• JPEG or PNG: for web or image-based output
• Adobe PDF (Print): for high-resolution print files
• TIFF (if available): for lossless print output
Name your file and click Save.
✅ 4. Access the Resolution Settings
After clicking Save, an export window appears with advanced options.
If you chose:
• JPEG or PNG → Go to the Resolution field
• PDF (Print) → Click Compression, then adjust image quality and sampling
✅ 5. Change the DPI
In the Resolution field:
• Type 300 for professional print output
• Choose 150 for mid-range quality
• Use 72 for web or email previews
If exporting as PDF, under Compression, set:
• Downsampling: to 300 pixels per inch for images above 300 ppi
• Image Quality: Maximum or High
✅ 6. Click 'Export'
Once your DPI and quality settings are adjusted, click Export. InDesign will render your file at the specified resolution.
🧠 Tip: Check Image DPI Inside InDesign
To verify whether your placed images are truly high resolution:
1. Go to Window Links
2. Click on any image in the panel
3. Check the Effective PPI — it should be 300 or higher for print
If the Effective PPI is too low, you may need to resize the image or replace it with a higher-resolution version.
