The Kalbeliyas are gypsies from the desert in Rajasthan, India who are known for their Music, Dance, and Snake charmer skills.
There is a startling resemblance between the dance and music of Spain and those of Kalbeliyas.
The traditional occupation of the KALBELIAS is to catch snakes and train them to dance to the sound of the PUNGI (a wind instrument) for which they are called snake charmers. Some trade the snake's venom as well. Today, this charismatic caste is mainly comprised of musicians and singers. The word "Kalbelia" refers to the one who catches "kal" (black), they are also known as Sapera meaning cobra snakes. Kalbelia women compose the songs of the caste and are known as the best dancers of the THAR desert. the dancing costumes are traditional black attires and the dance movements resemblance the movements of snakes.
