Why is there such a split between what reviewers think of HostGator and what the users think? Well, in short - money. Reviewers get paid to promote it and less honest ones just push whatever pays them the most with no concern for you as a buyer. While users or more honest reviewers share the actual data. In this review, I wanted to do my own independent testing and do a HostGator review that would be honest and represented what you're getting yourself into as a customer.

Pricing

HostGator follows the same tricks most other web hosting companies do. They advertise the prices that are lower for your 1st purchase and then increase when it's time to renew.

So you could buy a plan for $3 a month for 1 year. But once that expires and you need to renew again it could go up 2x.

This makes the price seem lower than it actually is, but this tactic isn't exclusive to HostGator. 9/10 web hosting companies do this to attract customers.

Company Ownership

HostGator is not in independent company anymore. They are owned by a larger corporation that's buying up a lot of major web hosting companies and then continue to operate them under the original name.

Most people agree that EIG (the corporation that owns HostGator and many other companies) are more profit than people driven and they make decisions that aren't helpful to the end-user but make the company more money.

Being owned by a bigger corporation is both good and bad. Meaning HostGator now has more resources than ever to provide a great service, but they're so profit driven that those options rarely get put into place.

Performance

HostGator is in the middle of the pack when it comes to performance. They're not a fast web hosting company, not even close. But again, they're not supposed to be - they're a cheap web hosting provider.

The biggest downside is that for the same price you can get better performance from such companies as Hostinger or Interserver leaving HostGator a bit behind.

However as a positive their experience and infrastructure allows to have them a really stable service. So, my HostGator websites almost never go offline even tho they load slower than with other companies. For some businesses this is a worthwhile trade.

Extra Features

This is my personal biggest disappointment from HostGator in this review. I always expect companies to offer unique features you can't find anywhere else so they could off-set any performance or pricing issues they had.

Well, HostGator doesn't really offer anything unique anymore. Since they were one of the first companies they pretty much offer the same standard package that every competitor has copied from them.

But the competitors added their own features over time, while HostGator stuck with the more traditional run of the mill service.

Control Panel

In this HostGator review I also take a look at their control panel. Which I quite like, it's an easy to use blend between the standard cPanel you see everywhere and HostGator custom controls.

This blend makes it easy for beginners to get into web hosting and allows more seasoned users to still have all of the advanced functionality that comes with cPanel.

Conclusion

HostGator is an older company that just works fine. But that's not good enough in 2021 anymore. There are plenty of companies that offer you MORE than you paid for and go above and beyond to keep you as a customer.

HostGator is now just a fair company. If you choose to go with them, stuff will work, you will be able to create a website no problem. But it won't be the best way you could of spend the same money.
