The Standard 8
1953......A film made out of outtakes from a documentary, no sound on the original footage, so have dubbed on some ambient sound and period music.
The film shows the later stages of production and setting up , followed by delivery to a lucky 1950s family, I say lucky because you had a long wait for a new car, as it was all export or die, the home market had to come second.
The Standard Eight is a small car produced by the British Standard Motor Company from 1938 to 1959.
The car was originally launched in 1938 as the Flying Eight. After the Second World War the Flying range of Standards was dropped but an updated car called the 8 hp was re-introduced in 1945. In 1953 a completely new car, the Standard Eight was launched sharing virtually nothing with its predecessor. In 1959 the car was dropped to be replaced by the Triumph Herald, as the Standard brand was being phased out.
what stands out most is just how basic these cars where, but then it was transport at a time when many people were still driving pre war cars.
From a personal point of view I would rather drive one of these on a daily basis than the over engineered over weight euro boxes on the market these days.
