Christopher Hitchens argued that freedom from religion matters just as much as freedom of religion. Private belief is one thing, using faith to control how others live is another. Religious institutions often speak about morality while working to suppress dissent, shape laws, and demand obedience. If an idea cannot survive open criticism, how strong is it?

Hitchens rejected the claim that faith deserves automatic respect. A belief should be defended with evidence, not protected by tradition or intimidation. Across history, progress came from those who questioned dogma, not from those who obeyed it. Science, civil rights, and free thought advanced because people refused to be ruled by ancient authority.

Religion can inspire kindness, but it has also justified intolerance, censorship, and control. It influences politics, public health, and education even among those who do not believe. The issue is not personal spirituality, it is power without justification.

So here is the question: Is religion a force for freedom, or a barrier we have yet to dismantle?
