POCculture.com interview with the director of Haunted Mansion, Justin Simien.

Simien talks about his life-long love of Disney, Disney films and the Haunted Mansion theme park attraction. He says that there is something radical and subversive about a story that hinges on a Black hero being allowed to feel and appropriately grieve, and to give to another young Black kid.

Comparing star LaKeith Stanfield's performance to Johnny Depp's in Pirates of the Caribbean, Simien says that Stanfield has the unique ability to make you care deeply about his characters.

Of course, I had to ask Simien whether there was any consideration in having Eddie Murphy, star of the first Haunted Mansion film, cameo in this film. Simien raves about Murphy but says it wasn't in this cards this time.
