Road To The Boston Marathon: Erika Kemp's 26.2 Debut

"With the marathon being so new and such a different type of challenge, I think having too specific of a time goal for myself would just be kinda distracting on race day because you never know what kind of day you're going to get, especially on a course like that...My goal is to get through the first half with my legs under me and run the best second half that I can."

Erika Kemp is preparing for her marathon debut at the 2023 Boston Marathon.

Kemp, who has lived in Boston since 2018 has been working with her new coach, Kurt Benninger, in the leadup to this year's race. Erika has a personal best of 1:10:14 for the half marathon, which she ran at the 2023 Houston Half and qualified for the 2024 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. Before focusing on the roads, she was a standout on the track and earned 6 All-American honors while at N.C. State. As a pro, she ran 15:10 for 5,000m and 31:35 for 10,000m on the track.

In early 2023, Kemp decided not to re-sign with the Boston Athletic Association’s High-Performance Team and has since signed a new sponsorship deal with Brooks. After the Boston Marathon, she will move to Providence to train with Benninger's group, which includes Molly Huddle and Marielle Hall.

We joined Kemp on a run last month to chat about what she is looking forward to in her debut at Boston and the new challenges and opportunities that come with it.
