Leonard Bernstein: The Lark - Court Song / Harry Christophers conducts The Sixteen
"The Lark”, a play about the life, trial, and death of Joan of Arc, opened on Broadway on November 17, 1955. Lillian Hellman translated and adapted the play from Jean Anouilh's French play, “L'Alouette.” Evoking medieval themes, Leonard Bernstein composed French and Latin choruses as incidental music to the play.
During this period, Hellman and Bernstein were collaborating on “Candide,” which would open on Broadway one year later. The original "Lark" cast featured Julia Harris as Joan (for which she won her second of six Tony Awards), and Boris Karloff as Pierre Cauchon, one of the bishops responsible for Joan’s execution.
