Q&A - Will this ivy harm this tree?

UT Extension Horticultural Specialist Carol Reese says the ivy on the tree needs to be killed. The ivy will eventually grow to the point that the tree leaves will not get enough light and the tree will die. Also, the presence of the ivy will increase the chance of the tree falling in the wind of a storm. To kill the ivy, cut it at ground level and keep cutting as new shoots come up. Do not pull the ivy off the tree as it will damage the tree bark. The ivy will eventually fall off the tree though it may take several years.
