Much like every person has their own story to tell, many places in this world do too. Some stories are boring and mundane but others can be extermely mysterious and even downright terrifying. These are the 5 most haunted places on Earth.

5. Edinburgh Scotland

It's no surprise Edinburgh, Scotland shows up in this list. With thousands of years of rich history, Scotland is one of those places that force you to face the past – even if you don't want to.

Two of the most famous places that attracts unique paranormal energy are Edinburg Castle and Mary Kings Close.

Edinburgh Castle has been standing for over 900 years. Built as a military fortress, it's seen kingdoms come and go; its walls a silent witness to countless drama, executions, invasions and even murder.

4. Hell Fire Club, Ireland

Ireland is a land filled with many scary stories. But there's one that takes place high up on Montpelier Hill that terrifies like no other. Known as the Hell Fire Club, the structure that stands there now was initially built on a passage tomb. These passage tombs dated as far back as the Neolithic period (4500 – 2000 BC) and were surrounded by large boulders.

The structure later known as the Hell Fire Club was first built in 1725 by William Conolly who was the Speaker of the Irish House of Commons and known as the wealthiest man in Ireland during the time.

3. Suicide Forest, Japan

Known as the "Sea of Trees", Aokigahara Forest lies at the northern base of the majestic Mt. Fuji. Even though its stunning greenery impresses anyone who sees it, these woods are well known by a more sinister nickname – The Suicide Forest.

For decades, Japanese people who feel like life has given them the short end of the stick, have come here to commit suicide.

2. Highgate Cemetery, England

Known as London's most haunted cemetery, the Highgate Cemetery has stood its ground for almost 100 years. In Victorian-era England, the final resting place for the who's who was always Highgate.

Beautifully intricate graveyard walls, meticulously crafted headstones and distinct markers were the norm – as each family attempted to outdo one another. However, when the war came, the cemetery became neglected and overgrown – with nature reclaiming most of the headstones and graves.

1. Poveglia Island, Italy

Death was so rampant on Poveglia Island that it's said nearly 50% of the topsoil on the island is made up of human remains.

The first mention of this place was in 421, when people fled to it in order to escape the barbarian invasions. Since then, it's been both occupied and abandoned several times. By 1776, Poveglia became the jurisdiction of the Public Health Office. Under their watch it became a checkpoint for goods coming in and out of Venice.
