Toll Scam Texts Are Back

Sound familiar? It might be a scam. Toll payment smishing scams are on the rise, with more than 10,000 fake domains uncovered by cybersecurity researchers and nearly 2,000 reports filed with the FBI in the past year.

Here’s what you need to know:

What is it?
Scammers send urgent, fake texts claiming you owe a toll. The link leads to a phishing site designed to steal your credit card and personal info.

Why it works:
They count on panic — and small dollar amounts — to trick you into clicking without thinking. Once you pay, they may hit you again.

How to stay safe:
Never click links in unsolicited texts
Verify tolls directly with your official toll authority
Report scams to the FBI’s IC3 at ic3.gov
Delete suspicious texts immediately
If you entered info, contact your bank fast
Be alert. These messages may look legit—but don’t fall for it.
