HCG: What Every Man Should Know

The Medical Director of Defy Medical, Dr. Justin Saya discusses Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG). Transcript: HCG is getting much more publicity currently with the weight loss clinics. Technically, it's the same exact HCG that they use, but much different dosing and for much different purpose than what we use it for. We primarily use it for our males who are on testosterone replacement. Many males who are on testosterone replacement and even many who aren't who are just researching and learning about the topic, they're familiar with something that we call negative feedback.
What happens any time you're on testosterone therapy, and this goes anywhere from very low dose, AndroGel, all way up to some of the stuff bodybuilders do with mega amounts, your body senses you're getting testosterone, so it tends to decrease its own production. That's universal. It's supposed to happen. Your body always seeks balance if it sees you're getting it from somewhere else. It wants that balance, so it decreases.
The way it does that is it basically stops stimulating your testes. Your pituitary gland stops stimulating your testes so that they basically go into a hibernation mode so to speak. They're kind of dormant, unreserved, not really needed to produce testosterone, so they're not very active. A result of that and what patients notice on the objective finding from that is a lot of guys experience shrinkage, atrophy we call it, of the testes. That's where HCG comes in to play specifically.
What the HCG does is it basically mimics what your pituitary gland normally does, and it stimulates the testes directly. By stimulating them it keeps them active, and by keeping them active, it does several things. It keeps their testosterone production going, so that keeps some of your natural testosterone going, which gives you a little boost on top of what you're taking. Because they're still active, usually you don't experience any shrinkage at all, any atrophy of your testes. If you have experienced any shrinkage, it usually reverses itself.
Also, if you ever decide to go off of testosterone replacement in the future, your testes are active, so they're ready to hit the ground running so to speak with their own production, so it's a little bit less of a lag period when you go off of testosterone for your own body's production to pick back up. Another issue is with fertility. Any way you slice it when you're on testosterone replacement your fertility's going to be lower than it would be if you were off of testosterone completely.
Being on HCG, there are studies showing that increases your sperm count as well while you're on testosterone therapy, so being on HCG while you're on testosterone therapy would result in better fertility than if you were just on testosterone alone.
