How A Tensegrity Structure Works 😭

This object defies gravity. You see, this is a tensegrity structure. And at first glance it looks impossible, as if the top is floating with nothing actually holding it up. Your brain tells you it should collapse the moment you look at it. But it stays perfectly stable. And the reason why is a simple engineering principle. Instead of everything sharing the same forces like normal structures, everything is separated. See, The solid rods only handle compression, while the cables are constantly under tension. And that separation is what creates the balance. Causing the forces to cancel out and lock the structure in place, making it look like it’s defying gravity.
