George Kordis: Byzantine Artist
George Kordis is a master painter and iconographer in the Byzantine tradition based in Athens, Greece. For over 40 years, he has created sacred paintings, often right on the walls of Greek Orthodox churches. Panagia Phaneromeni is a modern Byzantine church featuring extensive wall murals painted by George Kordis over a period of two years.
George also creates secular works, based on stories from myth and other Greek themes. His mural for the Constantelos Hellenic Study and Reading Room at Stockton University in Galloway, NJ, features Greek figures from ancient to modern times, posed alongside a river flowing from Mount Olympus. It honors the legacy of Demetrios J. Constantelos (1927-2017), Distinguished Professor of History and Religious Studies, Emeritus at Stockton University. Professor Constantelos was one of the founders of Stockton's Greek studies program.
Also interviewed for the story are Tom Papademetriou, Professor of History and the Executive Director of the Interdisciplinary Center for Hellenic Studies, and Amy Papalexandrou, Assistant Professor of Art History.
Produced by Lisa Honaker, Pantelia Bairaktaris, and Susan Wallner. Narration by Dan Gordon. Cinematography and Sound by Argyris Theos and Christos Daskalothanasis (www.filmgreece.com) and Joe Conlon (U.S.)
