Often called the father of the Theater of the Absurd, Eugène Ionesco wrote groundbreaking plays that are simultaneously hilarious, tragic, and profound. The Bald Soprano is his first play, and one of his classic ones. In it Ionesco throws together a cast of characters including the quintessential British middle-class family the Smiths, their guests the Martins, their maid Mary, and a fire chief determined to extinguish all fires — including their hearths. It's an archetypical absurdist tale and Ionesco displays his profound take on the problems inherent in modern communication.

Social norms and the very language used to convey meaning descend into mindless gibberish and darkly menacing anarchy when Mr and Mrs Smith host Mr and Mrs Martin for dinner at their home in a quiet suburb of London. Ionesko achieves in satirising in the most funny and absurd way the way people fail to communicate, to connect, and to have any kind of substantial conversation.
