7.1 Atomic Radius | Periodic Trends | General Chemistry
Chad provides a comprehensive lesson covering everything you need to know about Atomic Radius. The lesson begins with the general trend of increasing atomic radius down a group and from right to left across a period. The increase in atomic radius from right to left across a period might seem counter-intuitive at first glance, but is explained by a corresponding decrease in effective nuclear charge experienced by the valence electrons. How atomic radii directly affect bond lengths is also covered as well as ionic radii including how cations are smaller than their corresponding neutral species while anions are larger. The lesson is concluded with a comparison of the radii of an isoelectronic series.
