Sir Peter Blake on Sir Edwin Landseer's 'Monarch of the Glen'

Sir Peter Blake’s prominence in the Pop art movement saw him becoming one of Britain’s best known pop artists in the late 1950s. Inspired by popular culture, Blake is celebrated for his co-creation of the Beatles’ iconic ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ record sleeve in 1967, with his then wife, Jann Haworth.

In 1964, Blake was commissioned by Paul McCartney to create an artwork for his Mull of Kintyre estate. Deciding to depict a stag, Blake looked to Sir Edwin Landseer’s ‘Monarch of the Glen’ (1851) for inspiration...
