Mike Howard, Former CIA Operations Officer & Microsoft Chief Security Officer describes his career

Interview of Thursday, 3 February 2022 of Mike Howard explaining the variety of CIA career postings and assignments which took his career rapidly upwards and eventually led him to handle all security for Bill Gates and the Microsoft Corporation. Mike provided security for DCI Bill Casey, handled risky operations in the Philippines, and reorganized worldwide security for Microsoft, its principals and employees, including personal security for Bill Gates. Howard explains that no matter how successful you have been or are as a leader, you are never finished with your leadership journey. You have to forge your own path to leadership to become truly “masterless” when it comes to leadership acumen. He also stresses the importance of being selfless in your leadership style and actions. BIOS:
MIKE HOWARD former Chief Security Officer (CSO) at Microsoft for 16 years, served 22 years as an Operations Officer with the CIA. In his youth, he served a few years with the Oakland, California Police Department. Education: BS, Criminal Justice/Sociology, San Jose State University; Martial Arts Expertise, Karate, Jiu-Jitsu, Aikido.
He is Past President, Board of Directors, of the International Security Management Association (ISMA); Former Chair of the Fostering Innovation (technology) for U.S State Dept. Overseas Advisory Council (OSAC); Past Board member, Security Industry Association, Past President CSO Roundtable Advisory Board for ASIS.
He and his wife recently retired to the Las Vegas area.

RALPH MARIANI is a former CIA Operations Officer. He served with Mike Howard in Manila.

JAMES R. HUGHES currently serves as the 17th President of AFIO. His service began January 2015. He had a career of US Government service spanning 37 years in numerous foreign countries with a particular focus in the Middle East. He started in U.S. Military Intelligence in the late 1960s and then joined the CIA’s Clandestine Service. He served overseas as a Chief of Station several times, and at CIA Headquarters in a number of senior management positions, including as Chief of the Near East and South Asia Division, in the Directorate of Operations [today’s National Clandestine Service]. He was also named the Associate Deputy Director of Operations (ADDO) at the National Security Agency, 1998-99. Following his retirement from the government in 2005, he joined EDS in Herndon, VA, as the Client Industry Executive for the U.S. Intelligence Community. After the HP acquisition of EDS, he continued to serve in a similar capacity until his retirement in 2012. His parents were missionaries in Turkey in the 1950s, where Jim spent his formative years. He is fluent in Arabic.
