Trump calls Iran’s counterproposal “unacceptable”

President Trump on Monday called Iran’s counterproposal to a U.S. peace plan “unacceptable” without providing details.

“It was just unacceptable,” he told reporters in the Oval Office. “You know, a lot of people said, well, does he have a plan? Yeah, of course, I do have a plan. I have the best plan ever.”

The president said his “very simple” plan is that “Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon.”

“If they did have it, the Middle East would be gone, Israel would be gone and they’d hit Europe probably next,” he warned. “We’re doing a service to the world.”

The president also criticized his detractors and Iranian officials who believe he is improvising or would grow tired of the war that began in late February.

“Are they stupid people? They didn’t want to believe it,” he said. “They think that, well, I’ll get tired of this or I’ll get bored or I’ll have some pressure. But there’s no pressure. There’s no pressure at all. We’re going to have a complete victory.”

According to Iranian state media, Tehran demanded U.S. war reparations, recognition of its sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, and an end to American sanctions.

The first two demands are widely viewed as nonstarters for the U.S., while the third would likely require significant Iranian concessions on its nuclear program.
