Cheapest Rolex Watches Buying Guide: Top 10 Under $6K
Cheapest Rolex Watches: The first question many people ask when shopping for a Rolex is, what is the cheapest Rolex? While the brand itself will always command a premium on the market for its fine attention to detail, exquisite materials, and innovative movements, you might be surprised to find that the cheapest watches are still obtainable by most budgets.
Thanks, in large part to some seriously clever marketing, Rolex prices have more than doubled within the past decade. Demand is incredibly high as the brand’s visibility grows, so now is the time to invest if you’ve been considering adding a Rolex to your watch collection.
Today, we'll discuss three inexpensive Rolex watches that are great options for anyone who seeks a cheap Rolex: the Air-King, Explorer, and Datejust.
The Rolex Air-King
The Rolex Air-King runs on a time-only movement and is always produced in stainless steel, making it a very attractive option among those who seek a value watch. It was introduced to the market as a tribute to the pilots of the British Royal Air Force in 1945, the same year as the insanely successful Datejust, and is often overlooked for watches with more sophisticated movements and precious metals. Despite its simple design, the Air-King is still backed by the high-quality craftsmanship of the Rolex brand and displays the iconic crown logo on its dial.
The newest variation of the Air-King was released to market just a few years ago via the 40mm ref. 116900. Its feature set is decidedly more contemporary than the original 34mm model and retails for $6,200. Earlier model Air-King watches are much cheaper than the current 40mm generation, with references such as the 5500, 14000, and 114200 all selling for under $4k on the secondary market.
The Rolex Explorer
Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary became the first people to reach the summit of Mount Everest in 1953. During their climb, one of those men was wearing a Rolex Oyster on his wrist. The Oyster case was tough enough to withstand the extreme conditions of Everest, a fact that the brand celebrated with the release of the Explorer mountaineer’s tool watch.
Similar to the Air-King, the Explorer runs on a time-only movement and is only produced in steel, making it another attractive option for anyone who seeks an entry-level Rolex.
The current ref. 214270 was released in 2010 with a larger 39mm case and retails for $6,550. If you compare the newest generation of Explorers with the 36mm variation, there isn’t much of a price difference. Much older references are rare and command a premium on the market while references produced in the past few decades, such as the 14270 and 114270, are typically found for under $6k on the preowned market.
The Rolex Datejust
The Datejust is one of Rolex’s most iconic watches and is often the first choice of many entry-level collectors. It was released in 1945 and features an automatically changing date window on its dial, which runs on a slightly more sophisticated movement than the Air-King or Explorer. In addition to offering stainless steel options, the Datejust is also available in two-tone and all-gold options, which will appeal to anyone who seeks a cheap Rolex in precious metal.
The modern Datejust is also available in a broader selection of case sizes, ranging from women’s 28mm to classic 36mm and the larger 41mm. The more traditional 36mm Datejust retails for $6,800. Ladies sizes are typically the cheapest option, and the newer generation of 41mm Datejusts is usually the most expensive.
The most popular option among collectors is the 36mm Datejust. Older variations, such as the references 16013, 16200, 16233, and 16234 can be found for under $6k.
Depending on your style, there are many options available on the market when it comes to cheap Rolexes.
The Air-King and Explorer both run on a time-only movement and are only available in steel. If you seek a precious metal watch, the Datejust offers a broader range of metal options and also features a date mechanism on the dial.
All of these options can be yours without breaking the bank.
