Creative effects with real iron powder on a large canvas

Real iron powder on a stretched canvas (32 x 40). White chalk markers on a black surface.

This video is a follow up to the previous demo using white chalk markers on a canvas panel that had a black primer applied.

Iron powder, PVA glue, spray with Hydrogen Peroxide (food grade 12%) Vinegar and salt water.

The canvas has been painted with a black gesso primer and the composition was created with white chalk markers as shown in the previous video. I have not fixed the chalk before moving onto this next stage because I wanted to see if the water would create an interesting effect when I began to spray the canvas.

The real iron powder has been applied in a very thin layer (you can find iron powder on ebay or sculpture suppliers) I paint PVA glue over the areas that I want the iron to fix to then sprinkle a very small amount of the powder ( this iron powder has a small amount of gravel mixed with it from a previous work) When the glue is dry shake of any access powder and you are ready to begin the process of oxidizing the iron. I begin by spraying with the Hydrogen Peroxide, leave this for an hour then spray again the effects and colour change is almost instant but over time this will increase. I then add a little salt water and vinegar to the Hydrogen Peroxide and continue to spray, allowing about half an hour between sprays. When you have achieved the effect you want, leave overnight to dry then finish with a spray of acrylic matte varnish (this may change the colours so you could try a test spray first)
