Michael Price - The Stopped Horse
The Stopped Horse is the second single from Michael's upcoming album Whitsun. It was both composed by Michael and performed on his Klavins Una Corda piano.
"Sylvia Plath described a 1960 visit to Whitby in a letter to her mother like this: "There is something depressingly mucky about English sea side resorts. Of course, the weather is hardly ever sheer fair, so most people are in woollen suits and coats and tinted plastic raincoats. The sand is muddy and dirty. The working class is also dirty, strewing candy paper, gum and cigarette wrappers."
Her poem Whitsun describes her disappointment at that trip, and it's from there that the title of this piece "The Stopped Horse" is taken. Where I depart from Sylvia Plath is that I love the British seaside, perhaps for all the reasons she didn't. The melancholy, the shades of silver and grey in sky and sea, the distant possibility of brighter times.
This short solo piano work, recorded on my single-stringed Una Corda piano, has something of a fairground ride about it, but the slow-moving kind. Weathered by the sea-spray and wind, but with a stoic resolve, the painted horses will still keep turning and turning, waiting for that quiet moment when the sun breaks from behind the clouds."
