China Opens three Gorges Dam

China has officially opened the Three Gorges Dam, the world’s largest hydroelectric power station, located on the Yangtze River in Hubei Province. This monumental project, which began operations in phases, has now reached full-scale functionality. The dam stands as a symbol of China's engineering prowess, with the capacity to generate over 22,500 megawatts of electricity, enough to power tens of millions of homes.

Its strategic significance spans across energy security, flood control, and navigation improvement. By taming the Yangtze River’s notorious floods, the dam protects millions living downstream. Environmentally, it reduces China’s reliance on coal, cutting down carbon emissions drastically. However, the project has also drawn criticism due to ecological concerns and the displacement of over 1.3 million residents during its construction.

With full operations now underway, the Three Gorges Dam cements China’s role as a global leader in renewable energy infrastructure.
