He left school, sold his belongings, and started a computer company despite everyone thinking he was crazy. Jobs didn't focus on logic; he followed his values and intuition, which led to the creation of Apple. Similarly, when I was in university, I faced a tough choice between a high-paying job and my struggling software business. Listening to my values, I chose my business, which eventually succeeded internationally.

I recently received an email from Philippe, a seller of Canon products, who is struggling because of declining sales in point-and-click cameras. Philippe is considering various strategies like network marketing and loyalty programs but feels lost. The core issue is that Philippe hasn't defined what his business stands for. I advised him to focus on his business's values. For example, if Philippe believes everyone can take great pictures, this guiding principle would shape his decisions, from the products he sells to the way his staff interacts with customers. This clarity will help Philippe make better decisions and create a business that people will support and talk about.

To discover what you stand for, start by understanding why you started your business. It's crucial that it's not just about making money but about the impact you want to have. Next, think about what you want to be known for—what will be written on your tombstone. Finally, imagine a world where money isn't an issue. What would you do every day? Answering these questions will reveal a common theme that defines you. For me, it's about belief, specifically in entrepreneurs. Whenever I face a big decision, I refer to this core value. Follow these steps to find your guiding principle and make decisions that align with your true values.
