III. Molto Vivace. As is typical for symphonies, the third movement of Dvořák’s Ninth is a scherzo (from the Italian for “to jest). True to its name,
this rhythmically complex, triple-meter movement opens with a nod toward Beethoven’s own Ninth Symphony, then romps furiously from beginning to end—save for the occasional relaxation into charming, dancelike melodies recalling the Bohemian countryside. Listen for the various returns of that three-note figure borrowed from Beethoven; listen also for a restatement of the first movement’s grand horn theme.
