What is GOOD at Ayer Rajah Food Centre? | Singapore Hawker Food

In this week’s Singapore Hawker Food, the SmallCityIsland duo was at Ayer Rajah Food Centre in search of great halal Singapore hawker food there.

Ayer Rajah Food Centre is known throughout Singapore for its wide selection of halal hawker food.

The hawker centre may be a bit outside of Singapore’s central area but that trip to Ayer Rajah Food Centre is well worth the effort. There are so many Halal hawker food options at this hawker centre including ayam penyet, rojak, halal western food, traditional malay food and Indian mee goreng.

What we had: Rojak Bandung Sotong

Power Rojak Bandung located in Ayer Rajah Food Centre, offers a lesser seen version of Rojak Bandung. This version includes cuttlefish, bee hoon, kangkong, pineapple, tau pok as well as cucumber. All of that comes with a sweet chilli sauce and loads of crushed peanuts. 

If you are bored with your usual rojak from the hawker centres or simply want to try something different - Power Rojak Bandung is worth a try. The mixture of rich ingredients and flavours makes it a very balanced tasty meal.

What we had: Chicken Chop

Western food is a common find in a Singapore hawker centre and has been established as a singapore hawker food. As a halal food option in Ayer Rajah Food Centre, this stall serves a wide range of halal western food and rice dishes.

The chicken chop we tried came with a thick piece of chicken thigh, coleslaw, fries, baked beans and a bun. A brown sauce covered the grilled boneless chicken thigh and complemented it nicely.

What we had: Ayam Geprek Sambal Terasi

Ayam geprek is beginning to take its place in the Singapore Halal Food scene. It is great to see it being served as part of the halal Singapore hawker food.

At Putri Hana, the ayam geprek comes with a variety of chilli sauces. The one we had was the sambal terasi.

Sambal terasi has a big difference compared to the usua sambal merah. There is a strong and distinct umami flavour in sambal terasi which comes from the use of prawn paste. It was a palette opening discovery for us.

What is a hawker?

A hawker in the Singapore context is someone who sells street food and now known as hawker food. In the old days, this was from a roadside stall or a pushcart. These days, hawkers can be found in coffee shops, hawker centres, and food courts (air-conditioned hawker centres). Hawkers usually specialise in a particular cuisine, sometimes in just one dish.

You can find hawker centres and food courts everywhere, including downtown whereas coffee shops tend to be located in the suburbs.
