The Kennedys Special Livestream #29: California Country Rock, Sunday Sept 27, 2020, 2pm eastern time
Sunday, September 27, The Kennedys Weekly Livestream Presents: California Country Rock, 2pm eastern time.
It was the late 60s, and from Sunset Blvd to Haight-Ashbury, hippies, flower children and peaceniks had been blissing out on a steady diet of psychedelic rock. On the street, there was a feeling that it might be time to flip the musical mandala from yin to yang. After the heavy sturm-und-drang of Marshall-amped power trios, a bit of acoustic strum-and-twang was a breath of fresh air that blew from Laurel Canyon all the way to Marin County. Hippie ensembles sought out rural band houses in emulation of The Band and Traffic, and a bit of roots music mixed with rock was a perfect fit for their laid-back ethic. The move to a simpler sound that combined down home singing and picking with progressive counter-culture values was led by a west coast advance guard including Buffalo Springfield, The Dillards, The Stone Poneys and Michael Nesmith in Los Angeles, and Moby Grape, acoustic-era Grateful Dead, and velvet voiced Kate Wolf to the north. The Byrds "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" was a clarion call, and Gram Parsons was the charismatic interlocutor who knitted together the disparate threads of traditional country and hippie subculture, especially when he joined forces with the once-and-future queen of country-rock, Emmylou Harris. The sound blew across the US and Europe like a fresh breeze.
We could all use a fresh breeze right about now, especially our viewers in the Golden State, so this week we celebrate California Country Rock. You don't have to be a Californian to dig it, as our viewers in Ireland, Scotland, England, Holland, Sweden, France and Norway will attest: all you have to do is settle in for an hour of, in the words of a Poco song, "a little bit of magic in the country music."
