how to make a magic wand/ woodturning
This is a video about how to make a magic wand on a wood lathe. This wand is inspired by the Harry Potter books and movies and the wider wizarding world. In this quick tutorial I show how to go from a block of wood (walnut), to a finished wand for your fun and enjoyment.
I start out by mounting a piece of black walnut between centers on the wood lathe. The blank is about 1 x 1 x 14 inches in length. I proceed to round the block of wood using a spindle roughing gauge starting on the end and moving from high point to low point toward the center. With a pencil I mark the location of the handle. Then using a spindle gouge I proceed to shape the wand end of the wood on the tailstock side. The handle is shaped with a 3/8" spindle gouge and brought down on the sides with a small skew chisel. I mark out some lines and burn them in with a wire burner. These are to define the detail we will put on the handle for grips. For a hand-carved look I carve a random series of flats and edges on the wand near the tip. I make a burn stipple pattern between the lines on the handle with a wood burning tool. To complete it I coat it with three coats of spray lacquer.
Now It's time to test its' magical properties!
