Please join us for a special discussion about trade and economic issues on the Korean Peninsula with Amb. Seokyoung Choi, former Ambassador to the UN and the WTO in Geneva, Ms. Wendy Cutler, Vice President of the Asia Society Policy Institute, and Mr. Matthew Goodman, Senior Vice President for Economics and Simon Chair in Political Economy at CSIS.
Amb. Seokyoung Choi is career diplomat who had worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for around 37 years and retired in December 2015. On July 28, 2020 he was appointed as Ambassador for Economy and Trade by the President. Since May 2016, he has worked as senior advisor at Lee & Ko, a prestigious Korean law firm. From September 2012 to September 2015, he served as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and Permanent Representative to the Office of the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Geneva. From October 2013 he served as one-year-term Chairman of the Executive Committee of the UNHCR and from March 2014 to February 2015 as Chairman of the Council for Trade in Services (CTS) of the WTO. From June 2010 to July 2012, he served as Deputy Minister for Trade of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade cum Chief FTA Negotiator. During this period, he successfully supervised Korea’s FTA negotiations and/or their ratification process, including those of Korea-EU FTA, Korea-US FTA, and Korea-China FTA.
Ms. Wendy Cutler is Vice President at the Asia Society Policy Institute (ASPI) and the managing director of the Washington, D.C. office. In these roles, she focuses on building ASPI’s presence in the nation's capital and on leading initiatives that address challenges related to trade, investment, and innovation, as well as women’s empowerment in Asia. She joined ASPI following an illustrious career of nearly three decades as a diplomat and negotiator in the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), where she also served as Acting Deputy U.S. Trade Representative. During her USTR career, she worked on a range of bilateral, regional, and multilateral trade negotiations and initiatives, including the U.S.-Korea Free Trade Agreement, the Trans-Pacific Partnership, U.S.-China negotiations, and the WTO Financial Services negotiations. She has published a series of ASPI papers on the Asian trade landscape and serves as a regular media commentator on trade and investment developments in Asia and the world.
Mr. Matthew P. Goodman is senior vice president for economics and holds the Simon Chair in Political Economy at CSIS. The CSIS Economics Program, which he directs, focuses on international economic policy and global economic governance. Before joining CSIS in 2012, Goodman served as director for international economics on the National Security Council staff, helping the president prepare for global and regional summits, including the G20, Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), and East Asia Summit. Prior to the White House, Goodman was senior adviser to the undersecretary for economic affairs at the U.S. Department of State. Before joining the Obama administration in 2009, he worked for five years at Albright Stonebridge Group, where he was managing director for Asia. From 2002 to 2004, he served at the White House as director for Asian economic affairs on the National Security Council staff. Prior to that, he spent five years at Goldman, Sachs & Co., heading the bank’s government affairs operations in Tokyo and London. From 1988 to 1997, he worked as an international economist at the U.S. Treasury Department, including five years as financial attaché at the U.S. embassy in Tokyo.
