Coloring Book Tests with Gesso and Watercolor Ground | Magical Jungle Johanna Basford and Animorphia

Here I'm testing Coloring Books Magical Jungle and Animorphia with Winsor & Newton Clear Gesso and Daniel Smith Transparent Watercolor Ground to see if I can get the Coloring Book paper to act like a watercolor paper.

I'm going through several experiments as listed below.

Firstly I'm showing how watercolor paint reacts differently on the coloring books compared to real watercolor paper.

Then, I make 3 new surfaces on the coloring book paper :-

Surface 1 - 3 layers of the Winsor & Newton Clear Gesso
Surface 2 - 3 layers of the Daniel Smith Watercolor Ground
Surface 3 - 3 layers of the clear gesso plus 1 layer of the watercolor ground over the top

I then test the watercolor paint on all 3 surfaces to see which ones, if any, act just like real watercolor paper.

I then test further with more layers of watercolor paint over the top.

I also tested the lifting out method once the paint was dry.

I also test other art supplies on the surfaces to see which will work and which won't work. The supplies I tested were :-

a hard colored pencil
a soft colored pencil
some watercolored pencils
a watercolor based Ironlak fine liner pen
a Faber Castel Pitt Pen Big Brush
an alcohol based Winsor & Newton Promarker
an alcohol based Ironlak marker

I then also tested masking fluid on all 3 surfaces.

Most of the tests were performed on the Magical Jungle coloring book by Johanna Basford and some also on the Animorphia coloring book by Kerby Rosanes.
