Psychosis
This was a short film cooperate I did for National Health Services so they can show examples to their patients.
John is a 20 year old Afro-Caribbean man who is a student in engineering at Newcastle university, He has no past psychiatric history, or anything significantly wrong in his medical health now or in the past. He has done well academically, and had lots of friends at school.
John did find it strange going away to study so far from home but in his first year things went quite well, and he did alright in his exams. This second year has been increasingly stressful. People in John's year started to talk about difficulties finding jobs, and what projects he would have to do in the 3rd year. Over the last few months, John has been feeling increasingly unsure about things around him, feeling anxious that something has changed, although it has been hard to put his finger on what.
He stopped going out with friends, kept to his room.
In the last 3 weeks things have deteriorated and John has stopped going to university – and never went back after the holidays ended.
John has become convinced that he has become involved in some sort of project for university that is related to national security. John had been having meetings with a tutor about a possible dissertation project about air flow over helicopter wings – he would test different shapes/formats in a wind tunnel at the university. He has always been aware that this may have a military use, but now feels there is a special role for him in this project, that only he can do, and that is secret from his tutor and project partner. John is now sure about this because he saw 3 successive traffic lights along the street go green just as his mother’s car reached them yesterday. Initially he didn't realize the significance of this, but after staying up all night last night and thinking about it, now he does. John hasn't been eating much, and has lost weight. He also has not been sleeping much – only 3 hours a night at most for the last week, working on his project.
