Książ Castle: Exploring Poland's Largest Fortress & Hidden Secrets

Książ Castle is the largest castle in the Silesia region of Poland and the third-largest in the country. Located in Wałbrzych, the castle has a rich history, with its first fortification being destroyed in 1263. It was rebuilt by Duke Bolko I the Strict from 1288 to 1292, who made it his residence. Over the years, the castle changed hands multiple times and went through various renovations. During World War II, it was seized by the Nazis and became part of Project Riese, a planned headquarters for Adolf Hitler. The castle was later occupied by the Red Army and suffered damage and looting. After the war, it was taken over by communist authorities and used as a recreational home and cultural centre. In recent years, extensive restoration work has been done, and the castle now attracts over 300,000 visitors annually. #castle #Nazi #polska #underground #poland
