New Bedford Walking Tour of Edwardian and Progressive Era Houses built on Arnold Mansion Land
Join Bruce Barnes and the New Bedford Historical Society on this walking tour of houses that were developed on land that was originally part of the James Arnold Estate. The property was purchased by James Arnold in 1819, who built the original Arnold Mansion in 1821. The mansion was inherited by his nephew, William J Rotch, who remodeled the property and willed it to children. Three of his daughters, Mary, Clara, and Anna decided to develop the property between 1890 to early 1900s to meet the need for executive housing created by the booming textile industry.
