Somehow, the Georgians have survived as a people--despite countless invasions, occupations, and devastations from the outside. At one point, little Georgia was buffeted on virtually all sides by officially Islamic states; at others, Georgia was merely one small part of much, much larger empires. Through it all--and, perhaps, because of it all--the Georgians developed a strong national identity that revolved in significant part around the Georgian Orthodox Church.
