Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Highlights from the DENSO NHRA Sonoma Nationals

Josh Lee scored his first career national event win in impressive fashion, winning wire-to-wire in Comp from the No. 1 qualifying spot with his Honda-powered H/A Bantam. Lee claimed the Wally after final-round opponent Steve Graham fouled in his Pro Stock-ready B/A Camaro.

Jim Grossi Jr. saved his best for last with a nearly unbeatable package in the Super Stock final that included a .004 light and an 8.500 on his 8.50 dial to knock out five-time world champ Justin Lamb, who was just .014-second behind at the stripe.

Paul Calvert’s U/SA Mustang may have been the slowest car in Stock competition at the Denso Sonoma Nationals, but it was also one of the most consistent and Calvert did just job to outlast the field. In the final, Calvert ran right on his 13.90 dial to oust championship contender Jared Jordan.

Allison McKoane won her second NHRA national event crown on Jerron Settles’ close -.001 foul start in the final round. McKoane previously was a Super Comp winner at the spring Las Vegas event in 2022.

Five years after scoring his breakthrough win in Super Street at the 2009 Chicago event and two years after a Super Comp runner-up in Sonoma, Ryan Giacone claimed Super Gas honors back in Sonoma winning a double-breakout final-round contest with John McKoane.

Thomas Bayer collected Wally No. 13 and his third at Sonoma Raceway after defeating David Myhre in the final of Right Trailers Top Dragster. Bayer killed the Tree with a .002 light and ran a 6.130 on his 6.10 dial to seal the win.

David Cook’s pursuit of the Right Trailers Top Sportsman championship got a big boost when he topped Jeff Gilette in the final round. Cook got the best of the double breakout match with a 6.678 on his 6.68 dial while Gilette ran .006 under his 6.81 dial.
