Saint Louis: The multicultural Venice of Africa | Legendary Cities

The city of Saint Louis in Senegal is steeped in history. Its name itself pays homage to Louis XIV. The French founded this strategically located trading post in the 17th century. The Faidherbe Bridge, constructed in the 19th century, reminds us of the period when the city was the colonial capital of French West Africa.

Sailors and fisherman, past and present, have learnt to cope with the treacherous waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Nowadays, this port is bustling with trade and commerce. Gold, rubber and also the slave trade contributed to the prosperous economy of Saint Louis. It is now the second biggest city in Senegal; immensely proud of its history and culture.
