Forty-seven people were on New Zealand’s White Island, also known as Whakaari, when the stratovolcano erupted with almost no warning on December 9, 2019. Investigators discovered that pressure had been rising rapidly beneath the crater, creating a sudden steam-driven explosion that sent ash, gas, and rock blasting outward in seconds. The eruption unleashed a deadly pyroclastic surge that swept across the island so fast that tourists and guides had virtually no chance to escape.
Scientists now use this tragedy to better understand phreatic eruptions, the kind that show little or no clear signs before detonating with devastating force.
