On Imagination by Phillis Wheatley Peters
Did you know Phillis Wheatley Peters was the first published African American poet?
Her poetry volume, “Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral,” published in 1773, includes the poem “On Imagination.”
Throughout the poem, Wheatley Peters describes imagination as a bird, free to fly, highlighting the power imagination holds. Our imagination gives us power to see beyond our pain and suffering. Where winter can turn to spring. Where we can fly without ever feeling bound. But it also gives us the power to act and pursue goals or a future that many might mock, disregard, or misunderstand.
Phillis Wheatley Peters inspires us to keep imagining a better world than the reality we are in. And even when our reality is winter instead of spring, we're reminded that our imagination—if only for a moment—offers a space for freedom.
