Medical bill debt collector threatening to sue?

If you’ve received a demand letter from a debt collector for a medical bill and they’re threatening to sue—don’t panic yet!

First, don’t pay anything until they provide proof that you actually owe the debt. Send them a request for verification, asking for details.

They may not even respond. And guess what? If they can’t prove it, they can’t collect!

Debt collectors usually buy old debts for just pennies on the dollar—meaning they’re probably not even prepared to prove you owe it.

Also, check your state's small claims limit. Most debt collectors won’t bother going to court for small amounts.

If they validate the debt, you can try negotiating for a reduced payment. But, if you’re still broke, sometimes doing nothing is an option.

Remember, debts have a statute of limitations. After a few years, they might not even be able to collect anymore!
