It’s hard to imagine a more often recommended, versatile pair of entry level hifi headphones than the Audio Technica: ATH M50Xs. Following their initial release back in 2014, the headphones became an instant success, garnering the attention of general consumers and audio enthusiasts alike. For $150, Audio Technica was offering a rather stylish, uniquely designed pair of headphones with a punchy sound that performed for just about any type of music. With the recent release of the official wireless version of these headphones, I decided it would be an ideal time to take another look at these, having now used them myself for over a year and revaluate whether they are really the jack of all trades I seemed to think they were last year. I’ve learned more about these headphones, and grown to love them even more in many ways. That being said, my time spent using them has taught me a great deal about the major strengths and weaknesses of these headphones, what they are best designed for, and who is really the ideal customer. These are a polarizing pair of headphones, an have earned passionate fans, and spawned an equally passionate group of haters. Today, we will be taking an honest look at one of the most popular pair of headphones to ever have hit the market.
Beginning with design, the swiveling earcups means the M50xs are perfect to place around your neck when not in use, as they feel far less clunky compared to most headphones which merely click together under your neck. The removable cable offering different lengths is an excellent feature, and one that should honestly be present on every pair of headphones. They were designed for portability, and offer a sleek, rather understated design without looking boring. That being said though, after using for hours on end the headphones become somewhat uncomfortable and begin to hurt your head. They clamp on pretty tight which means you don’t have to worry about them falling off, but sometimes may cause you to experience a certain degree of ear fatigue. Some have looked to replacing the earcups with ones made of softer material, but I personally haven’t myself. While the headphones aren’t what I would call uncomfortable, this is something to seriously consider if you are planning on using these for long periods at a time. All in all though, they are a very well designed pair of headphones given their price point, and have become so popular for a reason.
Sound quality is where these headphones really shine. I recently upgraded to an Audient ID44 interface and have been using the M50s exclusively with it for the last 5 months or so. When powered by a high end DAC like the unit inside the ID44, the headphones truly perform their best. Using a high end interface like this really exposes the headphone’s full potential. Vocals are always punchy, and a tight bass is present while never being overpowering. The mids are clear and well defined, and the same goes for the highs. Their sound is quite punchy and perhaps comes off as a bit harsh upon first listening. This is partially a result of their closed back design, but also something intentional on the part of Audio Technica to make their sound more exciting. In my book, this is all a good thing and makes for an ideal listening experience with anything from lossless wav files to streaming Netflix movies. Their low impedance means they don’t need much to drive them and will work just fine with even your phone. Streaming tracks through Tidal has opened the door to practically limitless high fidelity music for me, and provided me the opportunity to test these headphones with several different genres including alternative, hip hop, classical, folk, electronic and more. They always succeed no matter the genre, and really impress me with their reproduction of the acoustic guitar and breathtaking falsetto of Justin Vernon of Bon Iver (my personal favorite artist). Some people criticize their sound for being too bass heavy and not flat enough, but in my experience with some consumer level headphones in the past the Audio
