The Great Adamo Didur Sings "La Calunnia," From The Barber of Seville 1916

Polish basso Adamo Didur (1873-1946) is easily counted among the greatest of all the singing basses. He sang throughout Europe, always to great success, but made his artistic home the Metropolitan Opera from 1908 to 1932. His rich and sonorous voice, coupled with am immaculate sense of style and phrasing, made him a great success everywhere. Here is the famous comic aria from the Barber. Smart basses, like Didur, will not let it pass without notice that Rossini left all singing clues necessary in the lyrics of the song! When Didur sings "piano, piano, sotto voce," that is exactly how he sings it. The same with 'va crescendo" or "come un colpo di cannone." Also, Didur's Italian was exceptionally clear and concise, and very easy to understand. I should add that the high G natural at the end is most impressive!
