Modern House design with Historical Roots and Personal Touches Philip Olmesdahl

Olmesdahl subdivided the steep property along a contour, creating space for a five-bedroom family home on the upper section and two four-bedroom rental apartments below. This approach aligns with the city's densification strategy while maintaining the essence of a standalone house in a garden suburb.
Drawing inspiration from historical row houses and his travels to Mexico, Olmesdahl incorporated innovative architectural concepts into the design. He extended the house's footprint to create a podium housing various amenities, maximizing space utilization.
The use of red-pigmented off-shutter concrete and pre-cast concrete screens pays homage to Cape Town's architectural heritage. Internally, the house features crisp lines, clean geometries, and tactile finishes characteristic of SAOTA's signature approach. Skylights and clerestories enhance natural lighting, while the seamless connection to the exterior through glass sliding doors maximizes breathtaking city views.
Olmesdahl incorporated personal touches such as repurposing old furniture, like the dining table turned breakfast counter, adding personality to the space.
Inspired by Ricardo Bofill's work, the landscaping blends architectural and organic elements seamlessly. Interior finishes include polymer concrete flooring made from green stone aggregate and solid stone furniture crafted by local artisans, contributing to a dialogue with heritage craftsmanship.
Overall, Olmesdahl's home serves as a creative response to urban evolution, blending bold aesthetics with thoughtful engagement with materiality and heritage. It stands as a striking addition to Cape Town's suburban landscape, showcasing innovative design concepts while respecting the city's architectural legacy.
