The most important experiment in Quantum Physics
In 1801 Thomas Young conducted the
“Double slit experiment”
Young wanted to prove newton wrong in that particles behaved more like waves.
The experiment was simple
- Take a light source
- a double slitted screen and
- A back screen
And set it up like so :
The results shown here are what you’d be expect if photons are just particles. But that’s not what happened .
Instead they saw a back screen with multiple bands of light. Some brighter some darker.
When the light passes through the slits, it forms two new waves. The waves spread out and overlap with each other just like waves and This is called interference! The spot where the waves overlap is called superposition.
Later on, Scientists expanded on the experiment by adding a device that detects the number of photons passing through each slit.
They noted that half the photons go through one slit and half through the other.
But the weird part was that they NOW when they check the back wall, its just two bands.
Something about measuring the light forced our photons to act like more like particles!
Thus giving birth to wave-particle duality
